Mandate:
Legislation and/or Regulation:
New York State Law requires that each school building have at least one Automated External Defibrillator (AED) available with staff trained to use the AED. General oversight comes from SED, but AED providers are considered medical providers and are governed by the NYS Department of Health. Additionally, AED and CPR training is required every two years (under the American Red Cross).
Effective October 7, 2015, students are required to complete hands-only instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and instruction in the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at least once between grades 9-12 prior to graduation.
What the SRM Service can do to help:
- Training and Workshops:
- Training and recertification of school staff in AED/CPR under the American Red Cross.
Services:
- Assist the district in implementing an AED program in their school.
- Annual inspection of AED units placed in the buildings.
