First Aid/CPR/AED Training

Effective October 7, 2015, students are required to complete hands-only instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and instruction in the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at least once between grades 9-12 prior to graduation.

June 1-7 each year as National CPR and AED Awareness Week to spotlight how lives can be saved if more Americans know CPR and how to use an AED.
 

First Aid/CPR Training

Mandate: Education Law sections 101, 207, 305, 308, 804-c, 804-d and Chapter 417 of the Laws of 2014. Section 100.2(c)(11)

Effective October 7, 2015, students are required to complete hands-only instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and instruction in the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at least once between grades 9-12 prior to graduation.

As an Authorized Provider for the American Red Cross, our organization has become an important part of the Preparedness and Health and Safety Services training team. The American Red Cross and the American Heart Association (AHA) are dedicated to saving more lives from cardiac arrest through public awareness and educational programs that train more people in CPR. Both organizations develop guidelines and training materials that are specifically valid, so that all students receive training and education that is based on the most current science.

What the SRM Service can do to help:
Services:
  • Provide First Aid/CPR/AED courses and training to meet various needs of participant’s according to the American Red Cross standards.
  • Assist with hands only CPR and AED awareness training for students.

Automated External Defibrillators (AED)

Mandate:
Legislation and/or Regulation:
New York State Law requires that each school building have at least one Automated External Defibrillator (AED) available with staff trained to use the AED. General oversight comes from SED, but AED providers are considered medical providers and are governed by the NYS Department of Health. Additionally, AED and CPR training is required every two years (under the American Red Cross).

  • Training and Workshops:
  • Training and recertification of school staff in AED/CPR under the American Red Cross.
Services:
  • Assist the district in implementing an AED program in their school.
  • Annual inspection of AED units placed in the buildings.
