HSE Program
Studies have shown those with no high school diploma or High School Equivalency (more commonly known as a GED) face nearly a third higher unemployment rate than those with a diploma. They make $10,000 a year less on average than someone with a diploma or HSE. Test Assessing Secondary

 

Completion, which is the test used to get an HSE, preparation programs are offered at several locations including Northern Catskills Occupational Center in Grand Gorge and the Otsego Area Occupational Center in Milford. They are also offered at the former Center Street Elementary School at 31 Center Street in Oneonta, as well as in Delhi and Cooperstown. These programs are free of charge to those 21 years and older who do not have a high school diploma or would like to improve their literacy or math skills. Adults who are enrolled and are attending HSE classes may also enroll, free of charge, in  Career and Technical Education courses offered at the occupational centers. Enrollment is subject to availability and scheduling.

We also offer the Giving Ready Adults a Study Program. GRASP is a free program to qualifying adult students 21 or older who wish to prepare for the GED exam at home.

 

Health occupations are a growing industry in New York, which has an aging population. Certified nursing assistants work in many areas of the healthcare industry.
To be eligible for this class you must be 18 years of age or older and have a minimum eighth grade reading level.
Students will leave the class eligible to sit for the Certified Nurse Aide exam. CDO Workforce is offering limited funding to eligible candidates. Class size is limited to 16 students.Tuition is $1,650 and includes textbooks, a set of scrubs and the testing fee to become certified.

 

Home Health Aide
Home health aides play an important part in the healthcare field. Whether it is seniors who need a little extra care, or a younger person with special needs, home health aides bring healthcare to where some people need it most.

To be eligible for this class you must be 18 years of age or older and have a minimum seventh grade reading level. Students will complete classroom instruction and clinical time in a healthcare care setting and a long term care facility.

Upon successful completion of all requirements, students will be entered into the Home Care Registry, which allows them to be eligible for employment. Class cost is $500 and includes tuition, and textbook. Scholarships are also available to qualified applicants.

 

CNA to HHA Conversion
Switching from being a CNA to a home health aid may be the best career option for some people. To be eligible for this class you must be 18 years of age or older and be currently working as a CNA. CNAs with a minimum of six months of home care type work, documented by an employer, are eligible to participate in 12 hours of classroom instruction and an equivalency test.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive an equivalency certificate and be eligible for employment as a home health aide.

 

Practical Nursing Program
Licensed Practical Nurses often serve important roles in many healthcare settings.

 

The Practical Nursing Program is a full-time, ten-month classroom/clinical instructional adult education program that runs from September to June for students with a high school diploma or GED. All classes consist of 30-35 hours of instruction per week. Hours vary depending on semester and assignment, but generally run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for classes and 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for clinical experience, with the exception of one clinical session from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bassett Medical Center during the spring semester.
Upon completion of the program, the student is a graduate practical nurse eligible to sit for the Licensed Practical Nurse state licensure examination.

 

Childcare is an important, high demand field and offers secure career opportunities.
Participants must be 18 years of age or older and be a high school graduate or have their GED. Participants must be working in the childcare field for a minimum of six months. The CDA is a national credential.

Participants are asked to demonstrate their competence based on the 6 CDA Competency Goals. Class size is limited to 20 students.

 

Adults may enroll in the Career and Technical Education programs offered at the Northern Catskills Occupational Center or the Otsego Area Occupational Center Tuition for these programs is the responsibility of the adult student unless he or she qualifies for a tuition waiver. Enrollment is subject  to availability. Classes follow the school calendar and run fromSeptember - June.

Driver’s pre-licensing course 
The five-hour pre-licensing course is a pre-requisite to obtaining a driver’s license.
