Adaptive Physical Education

What is Adaptive Physical Education? (APE)

The National Consortium for Physical Education and Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities (NCPERID) defines adapted physical education as the following:
Adaptive physical education (APE) is physical education which may be adapted or modified to address the individualized needs of children and youth who have gross motor developmental delays. This service should include the following: - Assessment and instruction, Accurate assessment data, Individualized Education Program (IEP) Goals and Objectives/Benchmarks, Instruction in a Least Restricted Environment (LRE).
If you have a student who demonstrates deficiencies in physical development the Adaptive Physical Education Evaluation Referral Form assesses the following areas:
1. Muscle Strength, Endurance, Flexibility
2. Coordination of Body/Object Movement
3. Motor Planning
4. Body Organization - ability to internally organize inputs from the environment
